North Burlington Project Updates – FREE recreation opportunities for the summer and good news on property management
I have a number of reminders and new bits of information for all you.
May 1st at 7 pm at Glad Tidings is the date of the next Community Dinner meeting. The group is working very hard – they should be commended on the collaborative work that they have done! Keep your eyes and ears open for the official launch!
Recreation and Sports
We have an opportunity to fill 10-15 spots in the YMCA program that takes place at Tansley Woods Community Centre – Free. Need to have kids registered by May 15th so you get your choice spot/week.
We also have 5 spots for soccer through the Burlington Youth Soccer Club – ASAP.
If you missed the meeting you missed the info on how to get subsidies for SNAP CAMP and swim passes for example – please let me know if you or someone you know needs that information and we can get it to you – these are through the City and I can vouch for how great they are!
Please let me know right away if you are interested in these spots or have a neighbour who would benefit from this information.
Naming the Project/Website
For those of you who missed our last meeting we have named the project!!! The most votes went to : North BurLINKton Community Group.
Community Development Halton has set up a website for the group: http://northburlinkton.cdhalton.ca/ There is no content yet…start making suggestions!
Updates since last meeting. I now have a really positive contact with the BRAND new property manager for the Manor and she will be joining us at the May 16th meeting at Tansley United Church – Please tell you neighbours, this is our opportunity to make a connection. They are very open to talking about some activities in the complex. VERY EXCITING!!! We need to many neighbours out to show them we are committed to a positive change and a great relationship with them.
I have also just had a great conversation with Halton Housing about some event programming at Walkers Fields. They are keen to support us in seeing something happen there!!
Let me know if you – your church or neighbours want to help out – we hope to make these effort Youth focused with youth leaders from the neighbourhoods helping out.
City Of Burlington Official Plan Review
A number of you participated in the Transportation Master Plan consultation session. Here is another opportunity share your thoughts and help shape Burlignton. The City’s Offical Plan Review is now underway. The Official Plan is:
“…a statutory document required by the Province that describes a municipality’s approach to land use over the next twenty years. It addresses the location and form of new housing, industry, offices and shops as well as anticipated needs for infrastructure (e.g. streets, parks, transit, schools, community amenities), all needed for a growing city.”
There is an interactive Open House at Tansley Woods Community Centre Thursday, May 3, 2012 from 4 to 8 p.m in the Youth and Seniors Room. I plan to head over – hope to see you there!
Many of you may be aware that a homeless man in Burlington passed away recently. I spoke with him (Mike) on a number of occasions and he made an impact on me and the way that I saw my community. I wanted to share the information about a memorial service with you – sent by Mina from the Compassion Society. I will be going to the service if anyone needs a ride.
HOMELESS MAN DIES IN BURLINGTON – MEMORIAL SERVICE ON MAY 5, 12 noon
Some of us knew Mike and some of us did not. He was a homeless fella and a bit of a drifter. Harmless nonetheless…with quite the sense of humor and wit. Everyone’s life and soul are to be celebrated and everyone is important and valued, especially in Burlington. We leave no one behind, so if your schedule allows, try to stop by.
I thank Heidi Ram from Salvation Army for initiating this by contacting the police officer in charge of the case, and sending a message to his family.
Mike Watts memorial service is being held at the Burlington Art Centre on Sat., May 5/12 at 12:00pm to 2:30pm.
Send this on to whomever you like.
Thanks to all of you who continue to follow along! Looking forward to see as many as possible on May 16th at 7 pm.
